Kinds of conversation: making the intangible tangible

Sign language is beautiful but transient. Technology and art can intersect to creatively capture the ephemeral movements of signing bodies and render them in a wide variety of tangible forms. Technology is a powerful tool when directed at bodies; deaf or hearing. This project explores how technological innovation will shape that engagement. It will also explore how researchers, technologists, artists, and the hearing and deaf communities can communicate to recognise each other's cultures, share power, and work better together. This will become crucial as robotic, bionic and other technologies become increasingly prevalent in everyday life.

1st Workshop

Our first workshop took place in November with a small number of deaf and hearing participants (as well as 2 interpreters). The focus was on discussing the available tech, trying new things and exploring what comes next. We started with ink and clay, looking at how we can “imprint” a feeling or a word into an object, either using British Sign Language as a medium or a form reminiscent of that feeling.

You can see more of the process and more photos in our partner’s blog.

Our next workshop will take place in March - get in touch if you would like to join us.
